Birch Ridge Report: Playing shirtless a no-no

Posted: Thursday, August 07, 2003

Is this a great summer or what! All those in favor of extending the season keep your shirts on. Ah ha! Gotcha! So you know where I'm headed with this.

Gentlemen, I've heard all the disparaging comments; even had a few of my own. Brad Pitt, you're not. (If he were teeing off ahead of me I'd rather he were fully clothed. Yeah, OK ... but fair is fair, right?) Don't go scaring the wildlife or your mama; keep your shirt on when playing golf!

Speaking of golf, seems like if you play with Jay "Hole In One" Kriner, his success rubs off. While playing with the aforementioned, Don Moock punched through with a hole in one on No. 8. Gee, Jay, can I come out and play?

Men's Wednesday night was a "biggie." Nick Horn, Mike Azzara, Moe Redford and Mike Hollingsworth were our first-place winners. Second placers were Gary "Hombre" Stackhouse, Guy Hayes and Caleb Sizemore. "Hombre" came closest-to on No. 6. The same honors went to Pat McElroy on No. 8. Big Bob Sizemore had the long drive, while Dandy Dan Murphy and Dave Kirkvliet had pure, pristine birdies on No. 5. (If you don't get the nicknames, then all you other guys need to play on Wednesday nights.)

The heat doesn't seem to stop the swingin' seniors. Of course, they do play early in the day. This last Monday saw Chiya Bazan taking first place low net and closest-to on No. 8. Darrell Jelsma was a double winner with second place low net and closest-to on No. 6. Steve Hammarstrom gets kudos for longest putt on No. 5.

Sad to say, Tuesday Morning Ladies play their final game of the season on Tuesday. This last blast will be a varietal format with a pizza party after. All the Birch Ridge ladies who never played Tuesday mornings are still invited to join in on this last day.

Last Tuesday's ladies had a great time. Best ball team winners with a respectable 37 were Kathy Herring, Kathy Nielson, Chiya Bazan and Cheryl Hammarstrom. Wendy Boyce took longest drive on No. 7, while closest-to winnings on No. 6 went to Kathy Herring. Kathy Nielson showed us the way with longest putt on No. 5.

Please don't forget the Soldotna Elks Charity Tournament Saturday, nor the Bassackwards Tournament on Aug. 23. Last cup matches for the men and women of Birch Ridge Golf Course end Aug. 24, while the Senior League gives it up on Aug. 25.

This all sounds so depressing, I think I'll go shopping. Maybe buy a new SHIRT.
