Quilters to gather

The Stitches of Love Quilters will meet from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Redoubt Elementary School in Soldotna. Attendees are asked to bring projects, and ideas for quilt for next year's raffle.

The group is seeking donations of batting for its quilts for foster children. For more information, call Sharon at 262-1507, Jane at 260-9005 or Diane at 262-5588.

Agrium sets live fire training dates

Agrium Kenai Nitrogen Operations will conduct live fire training for its employees and the Nikiski Fire Department at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and additional sessions at 7:45 a.m. Thursdays, through September at the plant at Mile 21 of the Kenai Spur Highway.

Propane, gasoline and diesel will be used in the training. Occasionally there will be smoke and open flames visible from the highway near the north west corner of the plant.

Montessori open house set

Kenai Montessori will host a pre-elementary open house for families with children ages 3 to 5 years from 6 to 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at the school at 220 Main Street Loop across from the Kenai Fire Station. Refuge plans August activities

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge visitor center will host the following events. For more information, call 262-7021:

* Wildlife films Shown daily at noon, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m.

At noon, 2 and 4 p.m. "Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Where Wildlife Comes First" (10 min.) the refuge's wildlife story. Learn about its recreational opportunities.

At 1 p.m. "Showdown at Grizzly River" (55 min.) Journey to McNeil River to enjoy the spectacle of grizzlies competing with each other for salmon resources.

At 3 p.m. Sled Dogs (55 min.) Follow the adventures of Alaska sled dogs as they race the 1,100 mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

* The Environmental Education Center is open from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Free Wild Berry Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 17. Wild berry treats, activities and berry identification walks are some of the planned activities. Also a free drawing will be held for wild berry books and products.

Berry identification walks for families with young children are held at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Walks at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. are for ages 10 and older.

Fair quilt pick up available

Kenai Peninsula Quilting Guild pick up dates and times for the Kenai Peninsula State Fair will be as follows: Entries deadline is 1 p.m. Monday. Items may be brought to the fair office prior to deadline. Call the office at (907) 567-3670 to arrange a time.

Additional locations and times for pick up have been designated as follows: Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Seams To Bee in Homer (907) 235-6555, Robin Place Fabrics in Soldotna (262-5438) and the fair grounds in Ninilchik; and Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension office in Soldotna and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fair grounds in Ninilchik.

Quilts may be pick up at 5 p.m. Aug. 19 at the fairgrounds.

Golf tourney sponsors needed

The Kenai, Soldotna and Kenai River Rotary clubs will host a "Rural Alaska Immunization 2 by 4 golf tournament Aug. 18 and 19 at the Kenai Golf Course.

The groups are seeking companies to sponsor the event. Hole sponsors will be $150, par sponsors will be $300 and birdie sponsors will be $500.

Proceeds will benefit Alaska Public Health Nursing and regional Community Emergency Response teams to provided supplies and support for immunization services in rural Alaska.

Deadline for sponsors is Monday.
