Bowhunter program plans range days

Volunteer instructors with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Bowhunter Education Program will hold range-day qualifications today and Wednesday at the Kenai Peninsula Archers Range on Arc Loop Road south of Soldotna beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Participants must have completed the classroom portion of the program before they will be allowed to shoot at the range, and participants must bring broad-head tipped arrows to successfully qualify. For more information, call Larry Lewis at 262-9368

Veterans officer to visit peninsula sites

Today through Friday, Gary Kurpius, of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Alaska Service Office, will be available at the following locations to assist veterans and their dependents in securing veterans' entitlements:

Today at the Seward Job Service from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Wednesday at the Homer Job Service from 9 a.m. to noon, and at the Anchor Point VFW Post Home from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Thursday in Ninilchik from 9 to 11 a.m. and the Kenai Vet Center from 1 to 4:30 p.m.; and Friday at the Soldotna Post Home from 9 a.m. to noon.

Kenai chamber to host candidates forum

The speakers for this week's Kenai Chamber of Commerce luncheon are candidates running for state representative in District 9. The panel will be moderated by Merrill Sikorski. The meeting will be at noon Wednesday at Paradisos Restaurant.

Nikiski school registration this week

Nikiski Middle-Senior High School will have new student registration Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Students not able to register before school begins can register during regular school hours Aug. 24. Students transferring from North Star and Nikiski Elementary are preregistered and do not need to register again.

Returning students who have a problem with their current schedules or did not get a schedule at the end of last school year, may see the counselor on Monday or Aug. 17 from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m.

All seventh-grade students are encouraged to attend the seventh-grade orientation on Aug. 22 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Parents also are invited. There will be an orientation for other new students at 1 p.m. on the same day.

North Peninsula chamber to host candidate

The North Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will hold its weekly luncheon meeting Thursday at the Lighthouse Inn at noon. The speaker will be Brad Brown, Senate candidate for District E. The meeting is open to the public.

Healthy Communities meeting scheduled

The Healthy Communities/Healthy People Steering Committee will hold its regular monthly meeting at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bridges, 145 Kasilof St. in Soldotna. Presentations will be made from two organizations. Christine Hutchison will update members on activities associated with the Fetal Alcohol Support Group, and Kristin Lambert of Central Area Rural Transit System Inc. will give an overview of the status of activities toward the development of a public transportation system for the Kenai-Soldotna area.
