The Post 20 Peninsula Twins were eliminated from the Alaska State American Legion Baseball Tournament Tuesday in Anchorage due to a 6-3 loss to Juneau.
The Twins end their season 26-24-1.
Juneau and Post 20 had split four previous games coming into Tuesday's contest, so Twins manager Lance Coz knew his team would have to be firing on all cylinders to win.
But Post 20 committed four errors in the game, three of which led to Juneau runs. The Twins also squandered scoring opportunities throughout the contest, leaving 11 runners on base.
"Early in the ballgame, when we were down 1-0, we ran ourselves out of a couple of scoring possibilities," Coz said.
The Twins had runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, but a pick-off and a miscue where two runners met at the same base ended those chances.
"You have to take advantage of those opportunities against Juneau," Coz said. "They're a good ballclub. Four errors on our side didn't help at all, either."
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Twins made it 4-1 when Aaron Hughes scored on a single by J.D. Pault.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Twins cut the gap to 5-3 when Eric Newby doubled to push across Gresham Oliver and Brad Burck.
Then in the eighth inning, the Twins made a big push to tie the game by putting runners at second and third with nobody out. However, Juneau's defense stiffened, nabbing a pair of players at the plate on infield ground balls and making a spectacular catch in left field to end the inning.
"We had them on the ropes in the eighth inning," Coz said.
The Twins also had the tying runs on base in the ninth inning, but couldn't get them across.
"I told them I appreciated the fact that they were mentally tough," Coz said of his speech to his players after the game. "There were different situations where we did blow opportunities, but instead of giving up we came back and created chances the entire ballgame.
"We were in it until the last pitch."
Dominic Plasencia got the start for the Twins and kept them in the game. Plasencia yielded five runs in 5 2-3 innings, but only two of them were earned. Danny Bookey finished up the game and allowed the other run.
Eric Newby, Pault and Hughes all paced Post 20 with two hits each.
