The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra brings its Summer Strings Festival up the road to the central peninsula this week.
Three members of the DeVere Quartet performed an hour-long concert at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center at noon Tuesday. On Friday, the full orchestra will hold its Gala Concert at Peninsula Grace Brethren Church in Soldotna, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The orchestra is directed by Mark Robinson of Homer, and the Friday concert will feature Lindsay Groves, solo cellist of the DeVere Quartet, in Antonin Dvorak's Cello Concerto. The orchestra will play the same program Friday in Soldotna as it will in its Saturday performance in Homer, including pieces by Hector Berlioz, Aaron Copeland and Mozart.
"Mark (Robinson) chose some large, big concept, in-your-face music," Groves said. "They're great pieces, joyous and fantastic."
Groves said the quartet has enjoyed this year's festival, both for the challenging music Robinson chose for the concerts, and for the chance to work with the orchestra members.
"They've gotten so much better than last year," she said. "They sound great."
Tickets for the Friday performance are $15, with discounts available. Ticket reservations can be made by calling 235-7579.
