Kenai Mayor Pat Porter proudly presented her City’s Finance Director Larry Semmens with the highly esteemed Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce luncheon. The award was issued by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA). Semmens received the Certificate on behalf of the City’s finance department, “The City of Kenai Finance Department strives for excellence, especially in financial reporting. We are pleased to receive this award from the Government Finance Officers Association because it confirms that our financial statements meet the highest standards for financial reporting. Although my name is on the award, I could not achieve this without the help of the entire finance team of Robin Feltman, Heather Lawson, Susan Joy and Jenifer Lockwood,” said Semmens.
“The award represents the highest achievement for excellence in financial reporting by the GFOA. It is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management,” said Mayor Porter, “Larry, is a tremendous asset to the city of Kenai. He is a true professional that gives the city pride in having him on our team.”
Administrations across the U.S. and Canada submit their comprehensive financial annual reports to the GFOA every year for review. It is from those submissions that individuals and departments are selected by an impartial panel to receive the certificate of excellence. According to the GFOA those selected for the award have demonstrated a constructive “spirit of disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate users to read their annual report. The GFOA is a non-profit professional association serving approximately 16,000 government professionals.
