Two lies don't make a right for voters

Alaskans Against Government Mandates' and Planned Parenthood's recent, tear jerking ads continue to mislead the public about the truths of Ballot Measure 2.

The first lie is that girls from unsafe homes will be forced to tell an abusive parent about an unplanned pregnancy and desired abortion. That is totally false. If Ballot Measure 2 passes, teenage girls could have a grandparent, stepparent, older sibling, police officer or representative from the Department of Health and Human Services sign an affidavit stating the girl should not tell her parent(s). In this scenario, another adult becomes aware of the abuse at home and can address it, including reporting it to the Alaska Office of Children's Services. Planned Parenthood's solution is for the girl to get that secret abortion and send her back to the abusive home!

The second lie is that if Ballot Measure 2 passes, teens will be forced to resort to self-induced, "back alley" abortions in order to avoid telling their parents. Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood has not done its research. These kinds of abortions are very risky. Complications from these would increase reports to hospitals and other health care providers. In the 34 states where parental notification laws are in place, there has NOT been an increase in these reports.

It is time to get government out of the way. The current law is what is standing between parents and their minor daughters regarding a very invasive, personal, surgical procedure. Don't punish good parents with this continued contradiction in Alaskan laws. Parent (or guardian, described above) permission for any child's medical treatment or procedure just makes sense. The real heroes against government mandates are the supporters of Alaskans for Parental Rights and Ballot Measure 2.
