Homer edges Nikiski

Posted: Sunday, August 08, 2010

The visiting Homer football team defeated Nikiski 14-6 on Saturday in a season-opening, nonconference game for both teams.

The two teams met in the small-schools playoffs last season, with Homer also winning that battle.

The Bulldogs made it inside the 10-yard line three times in the game without scoring.

"In the first half, we basically dominated," Nikiski coach Ted Riddall said. "We just couldn't score.

"We fumbled the ball six times and lost five. You can't win that way."

Riddall said Homer came out with more fire in the second half. While Nikiski's mistakes were costly, Riddall said the ultimate measure of the game is on the scoreboard. The coach said the Mariners began to assert their size in the second half.

"I'm not taking away anything from Homer," Riddall said. "They battled. They deserved to win."

The Mariners went up 8-0 with 7:40 left in the third quarter on a run and a two-point conversion. Kaden Spurgeon, who led the Bulldogs with 134 yards on 33 carries, cut the gap to 8-6 with a 1-yard plunge with 3:30 left in the third.

Homer increased the lead to 14-6 on a pass with 7:00 left in the game.

Riddall said the good thing is the game is not a conference affair and Nikiski can learn from it.

"We already watched the film and saw a lot of good things on it," Riddall said.
