Global Crossing at the Glen

Posted: Thursday, August 09, 2001

Where: Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International's 11-turn, 2.45-mile road course

When: 2 p.m. Sunday

Broadcast: Television NBC-Ch. 26; Radio Motor Racing Network

2000 winner: Steve Park

Morris News Service's pick: Jeff Gordon

Others to watch: Ricky Rudd, Tony Stewart, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Robby Gordon and Steve Park

Notes: Posted awards are $3,101,768. Jeff Gordon has won three of the past four races at Watkins Glen. Counting last week's victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Gordon has led 277 of 560 possible laps in the past three races. With right- and left-handed turns, Watkins Glen requires a delicate blend of speed and finesse. A driver has to be fast enough to get to the front, but not so fast that he abuses the transmission or the brakes. Gordon said the secret to taming a road course is finding a rhythm.
