Soldotna resident George Lee Spence died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at his sister's home in Soldotna. He was 72.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai. Burial will be in the Apex Cemetery in Apex, N.C.

Mr. Spence was born July 17, 1932, in Apex to Bertha and George Walter Spence. At the age of 17, he entered the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged from his military service in 1957.

In 1976, he began full-time residency in Soldotna. He was employed in the tool room at Unocal's Nikiski plant until his retirement in 1989. He was an enthusiastic supporter of high school athletics and frequently could be found at community events.

"He was a great friend to the communities of the Kenai Peninsula. It was here that many people came to know him as the 'Candy Man,' a title which he cherished," his family said.

Mr. Spence was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Spence; and son, James O. Spence.

He is survived by his sons, Walter Lee Spence, Timothy H. Spence and John Paul Spence; sisters, Jenny Woods and Catherine Collins; grandchildren, Timothy H., Christopher Lee, Steven T., James O., Kelly and Heather M. Spence; and great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Colin.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
