Soldotna Little League takes Alaska State Championship

Kenai Public Health offers immunizations
The Kenai Public Health Clinic will hold extended hours for back-to-school immunizations. Clinics will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. today, Wednesday and Aug. 25 at the clinic.
Beginning today, immunizations will be given from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the clinic, with evening clinics scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 17 and 23 and from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 24.
Kenai Public Health also will hold immunization clinics in Soldotna at the Elks Lodge at 44560 Parkway from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Aug. 26 and from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 and 19. For more information, call 335-3400.
Watershed forum plans August events
The Kenai Watershed Forum has two summer informational programs coming up.
"Moose, Bears and Wolves, Oh My!" will begin at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge headquarters. Biologist Ted Bailey will give a narrative of his work with the mammals on the Kenai Peninsula and participants will walk the loop trails.
Dominique Collet will lead a two-part workshop on mushroom identification from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Sterling Senior Center. Participants will first carpool to different locations and collect mushrooms, followed by sorting, grouping and identifying the mushrooms.
The Kenai Watershed Forum summer informational talks, hikes and programs are free to the public. Preregistration is required. For more information about any of these programs, call Josselyn at 260-5449 or e-mail email@example.com.
Refuge hosts new films, nature walks
The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge continues its summer series of nature walks from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on the Keen Eye Trail. Round-trip walking distance is a half mile. Participants are asked to wear comfortable shoes and to leave dogs at home. Admission is free.
Visitor center hours are weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 262-7021.

The refuge headquarters also shows films at noon, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. daily. Films include:
"Kenai National Wildlife Refuge: Where Wildlife Comes First" (10 minutes) The film will show the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's wildlife story and discover the Refuge's recreational opportunities. The film is shown at noon, 2 and 4 p.m.
"A Mystery in Alaska"(55 minutes) Discover the world of humpback whales, salmon and brown bears and solve the mystery of why Stellar sea lions are declining in the waters of eastern Alaska. The film is shown at 1 p.m.
"Braving Alaska" (55 minutes) Gain insight into small group of Alaskans who live a fast disappearing 'bush' lifestyle in remote wilderness locales. The film is shown at 3 p.m.
KHLT summer programs continue
The Kachemak Heritage Land Trust will hold a monotype painting workshop in Halibut Cove with local artist Marian Beck on Aug. 19. Participants will meet at the harbor at 9 a.m. and return in the late afternoon and must provide own supplies and lunch. The cost is $60 and includes round-trip transportation to Halibut Cove. The class is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. Preregistration is required by Aug. 16. For more information, call (907) 235-5263.
Alaska Wildland Adventures is offering a rafting trip down the Kenai River to support Kachemak Heritage Land Trust on Sept. 6. Participants will take part in a rafting trip from Kenai Lake to Skilak Lake, passing through the Kenai River Canyon. The cost of the trip is $100 per person and includes lunch. Preregistration is required by Aug. 23. For more information, call 235-5263.
WRCC fund-raiser slated
The 20th annual WRCC-KSRM Radiothon will be held Sept. 13. Volunteers are being sought to work remote teams and help organize the event. It is the only major fund-raiser held for the Women's Resource and Crisis Center. For more information or to volunteer, call June at 283-9479.

Affordable helmets available
The central Kenai Peninsula Safe Kids program has low-cost bike and multisport helmets available.
Parents are reminded that a proper fit and positioning of the helmet are essential to its effectiveness. Children who wear their helmet tipped back on their head have a 52 percent greater risk of head injury than those who wear them centered on their head.
