Area drag racers burn rubber

Soldotna’s Charlie Johnnie and Nikiski’s Robert Doss both had success in drag racing at the Alaska Raceway Park in Palmer on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, Johnnie won the Top ET category, defeating runner-up Art Reed of Anchorage.

On Sunday, Robert Doss of Nikiski finished second in the Mod ET category, losing to Anchorage’s Mike Welsh. In was the first time Doss had appeared in one of the top two slots this year.

Area athletes compete in Hershey’s meet

A pair of athletes from the Kenai Peninsula competed in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games North American Final on Saturday in Hershey, Pa.

Matthew Thompson of Nikiski competed in the North American Final for the first time. Thompson finished 10th in the 800-meter run for 13- and 14-year-olds with a time of 2 minutes, 43.97 seconds. Antonio Palmer of Maryland won the race with a time of 2:05.76.

Robbie Smithwick of Soldotna finished 10th in the softball throw for boys ages 11 and 12. Smithwick tossed the ball 131 feet. Winner Justin Salazar of Colorado came up with a toss of 191 feet.

Lundahl, Matarrese take long drive

Rich Lundahl and Matt Matarrese won the Great Bear Ford Grip It ‘N’ Rip It Long Drive Competition Saturday at Kenai Golf Course.

Lundahl won the pro division. James Contreras was second, while Mark England was third.

Matarrese won the amateur division. Brandon Kaiser was second, while Stan Pitlo was third.

In the Kenai Chrysler Golf Championship, Jim Carson won the senior division with a two-day total of 5-over-par 149 and took home an extra $1,500. Louie Rungie was second in the senior division with 155 and collected $1,000, while John McBride was third in the senior division with a 162 and collected $500.
