ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Workers at the Valdez pipeline terminal have found a leak in a ballast water pipe, Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. said Wednesday.
The one-inch hole was found in one of the huge pipes that take oily ballast water from the ships to the treatment plant, Alyeska said in a news release.
Some of the oily water apparently leaked into the ground. But the company said it's not clear how much. The hole occurred in a part of the 42-inch pipe that's buried.
Two weeks ago, the company discovered the liner in this particular pipe was cracked. That can cause corrosion in the pipe. The berth that uses the pipe was shut down and further inspections were ordered.
Alyeska said it's working on a plan to fix the problem.
