Dillingham (AP) -- A Togiak woman drowned Thursday after she jumped into the Togiak River to prove she was a good swimmer, Alaska State Troopers report.

Lucy Harless, 43, was riding in a boat with her husband, Kevin, their two daughters, and two friends when she got into an argument with her husband over who was the better swimmer, troopers said. The adults on the boat had been drinking for a while when the quarrel began.

After Harless jumped into the river, she started having trouble in the cold water of the Togiak River. One of the men in the boat jumped in after her, but couldn't reach her before she went under.

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. Harless' body was found about two hours later a mile and a half downstream.
