KCHS high school reunions planned

The Kenai Central High School Class of 1971's reunion is today and Saturday. For more information, call Isaac Corr at 262-9681.

KCHS class of 1991 is also celebrating its reunion today through Sunday. Today there will be a golf get-together, Saturday swimming and a dinner at 6 p.m. at Paradisos Restaurant in Kenai is planned, and Sunday there will be a picnic at 1 p.m. at the park strip behind Little Ski-Mo's. KCHS staff and students from SoHi and Nikiski are all invited to join the reunion at the park strip in Kenai. Bring a dish to share and see old friends. Deadline for beautification nominations due

Today is the last day to turn in nominations for the city of Soldotna beautification nominations. They are due by 5 p.m. to the chamber office. Winners will be judged the third week in August. Nominations should include the nominee's name, phone number and location or address.

Pressure gauge testing offered

The Cooperative Extension Service will offer free testing of pressure-canner dial gauges today from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the extension office in the Doors and Windows' building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. Wednesday tests will resume next week.

Summer art workshops come to an end

Saturday at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center the final session of the summer art workshops for youth will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for 5- to 9-year-olds and 1 to 2:30 p.m. for 10- to 15-year-olds. The session will focus on storytelling with art. All workshops cost $10 to cover materials.

Soldotna pool closed for maintenance

The Soldotna High School swimming pool is closed until Aug. 27 for maintenance. For more information, call 262-7419.

First aid classes planned

The American Red Cross will offer a community first aid and CPR class Saturday. It costs $58, and those interested must preregister. To register and for time and location details, call Debbie at 262-4541.

Farmers' Market scheduled

The Central Peninsula Farmers' Market will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot at the intersection of the Spur Highway and Marydale Street across from JoAnn Fabrics. For more information, call 262-5463 or 262-7502.

Registration begins at area schools

The first day of school for students in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will be Aug. 22. Most school principals and secretaries already are back to work.

All new students and their parents need to attend registration sessions or contact individual schools to make other arrangements. In addition, some middle and high schools request that students come in for check-in procedures such as locker assignments.

Several peninsula schools begin registration this week.

Chapman Elementary -- Register between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. any weekday through Aug. 17.

Kenai Alternative High -- Call 283-7844 for an appointment any day.

Kenai Central High -- Register Monday or Tuesday between 8 a.m. and noon or between 1 and 3 p.m.

Moose Pass -- Registration opens Monday and continues through Aug. 21; hours are 8 a.m. to noon.

Nikiski Elementary -- Registration will be open Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Nikiski Middle Senior High -- Register Monday or Tuesday between 8 a.m. and noon or between 1 and 3 p.m. This does not include seventh-grade students transferring from Nikiski Elementary or North Star Elementary. Their records have already been transferred to the middle school. All returning students who wish to make changes in their class schedules may come to the school Tuesday, same hours as above. Picture IDs for all students will be taken Tuesday.

Ninilchik -- Registration for new students will be Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday will be scheduling for students in grades seven to 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

North Star Elementary -- Register Monday or Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Sears Elementary -- Register Monday or Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Skyview High -- New students register Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Aug. 20, check-in and locker selection for seniors from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and juniors noon to 3:30 p.m.; Aug. 21, sophomores 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; and freshmen noon to 3:30 p.m. All students need to bring proof that they are up to date on the current state-required immunizations. Soldotna Elementary -- Register Monday and Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Soldotna High -- Monday and Tuesday, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (new students and freshman); Aug. 16, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Aug. 17, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. (grades 10-12).

Tustumena Elementary -- Registration will be open Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Final day to turn in dipnet permit nears

All personal-use salmon fishery dipnet permits need to be returned to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game by Wednesday. Permits that were not fished still need to be returned. If the permit was lost, a replacement with your name, mailing address, fishing license number, driver's license number, names of household members, the dates fished, which fishery was participated in and the number of salmon caught must be furnished. This information can be mailed to State of Alaska, Department of Fish and Game -- Sport Fish RTS, 333 Raspberry Road, Anchorage, AK 99518-1599.

Original permits can be mailed or dropped off at the department's offices in Anchorage, Palmer, Soldotna or Homer Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call the Anchorage office at (907) 267-2218 or 267-2390.

Industry Appreciation Day planned

The seventh annual Industry Appreciation Day will be held Aug. 25 at the Kenai park strip from noon to 4 p.m. The celebration will honor the oil, fishing and tourism industries and includes awards to industry recipients, food, live music, a softball tournament and guest speakers from around Alaska.
