Suspected bootleggers get stuck in sandbar

Posted: Sunday, August 10, 2003

KOTZEBUE Two men who are suspected of trying to bring alcohol into Noorvik got their boat stuck on a sandbar offshore of the village.

A village public safety officer in Noorvik told Alaska State Troopers on Wednesday morning that Howard Ferriera, 29, and Brent Jackson, 23, were overdue from a boat trip from Kotzebue to Noorvik.

Several residents told troopers it was believed the men were on a trip to bring alcohol to Noorvik, which is 45 miles east of Kotzebue. The sale or importation of alcohol into the village is banned.

The troopers authorized a search crew to begin looking for the boat. About 2 p.m. Wednesday the safety officer told troopers she had found the men highly intoxicated in the boat, which was stuck on a sandbar.

The officer arrested Ferriera and seized four bottles of whiskey from him, troopers said.

Jackson jumped out of the boat when it was pulled to shore and escaped arrest. Troopers said a warrant is being sought for his arrest.
