FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The Reverend Richard Case has been named administrator of the Diocese of Fairbanks following the death Sunday of Bishop Michael Kaniecki.

Case will function as day-to-day leader of the Fairbanks Diocese until a new permanent bishop is appointed by the Vatican.

Alaska Roman Catholic Archbishop Francis Hurley said that process usually takes about a year.

Case is a Jesuit priest who currently serves as director of the Diocese's Native Deaconate Program, based in Saint Marys.

He assumes his new duties immediately.
