Running for fun, good cause

15th annual women's run attracts record number of runners

Posted: Sunday, August 11, 2002

On to each race, a little rain must fall.

Most longtime Kenai Peninsula Run for Women participants say they can't remember a race that didn't feature at least a couple of showers, and Saturday's 15th annual race was no different. However, that didn't stop a record number of women from showing up the the 5- and 10-kilometer race, which winds through the streets of downtown Kenai.

"We don't mind the rain. I think we had around 240 (entrants) this year. That's a record," said Heather Arnett, director of the Kenai Women's Resource and Crisis Center.

To be exact, 241 women, who competed in age categories from 14 years old and under to 60 years and older, chose to splash their way through the streets. Some, like Skyview High School sophomore Marci Mohler, came to show off some pretty impressive speed.

Mohler, who won the 10-kilometer event, finished in a time of 39 minutes, 52 seconds.

After the race, Mohler said she got a little push from a veteran peninsula runner.

"Kyle Gauthier was with me for most of the race. That helped a lot," she said.

Gauthier won the 40-49 age division in a time of 40:21.

Mohler also said the race came at a time when she was just beginning to hit her stride for the upcoming high school cross country season.

"It was a good race, and I felt good. And cross country started two weeks ago, which also helps," she said.

Other racers, like mother-daughter team Regina and Annalise Theisen weren't racing to win as much as for the exercise. Though mother Regina wasn't quite sure her young daughter was fully prepared for a 5-kilometer run.

"She has kind of a different pace than me. She sprints up ahead, then comes back. I'm more the turtle," Regina said.

Meanwhile, Annalise stood quietly at her mother's side, biting into a fresh orange.

"I don't know if she wasn't aware of how long three miles was," Regina said.

Annalise just smiled. Her mother took a long look at the first time 5-kilometer finisher and decided the hare had some energy left after all.

"She'll probably go home and play," she said.

WRCC director Arnett said the race is really about highlighting the programs the center has to offer, including domestic violence and sexual abuse counseling, food programs for women and children, a violence prevention program for men, emergency shelter care and a crisis line that handles nearly 1,300 calls a year.

Arnett said violence prevention, like running, is an important part of maintaining healthy people and a healthy community.

"We think it's important to live in a nonviolent way," she said.

"We really do it to bring out awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault, and to increase awareness of the programs we have at the center," Arnett said.

She said the race is a great way to have fun, get some exercise and, most importantly, raise awareness about the crisis center.

"Anybody who would like information on domestic violence or sexual assault is welcome to call us at any time," she said. "We're just trying to promote a more peaceful community."
