Palmer man killed in Glenn Highway wreck

Posted: Sunday, August 12, 2001

PALMER (AP) -- A Palmer man died in a weekend rollover accident on the Glenn Highway, Alaska State Troopers said.

Pete Schalig, 31, had been climbing with friends on the Matanuska Glacier Friday night. Schalig left the area at about 11:30 p.m. and was headed for Palmer when his truck swerved off the road and tumbled 75 feet down an embankment just north of Chickaloon.

Schalig was ejected from the truck and crushed beneath it.

Troopers think he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
