ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 13-year-old girl died early Friday in Selawik after reportedly huffing gas, Alaska State Troopers said.
Sophie Russell collapsed outside her aunt's house about 3 a.m., according to troopers. They said village health aides were called but Russell was pronounced dead at 3:50 a.m. after efforts to revive her failed.
Troopers said that about 15 minutes before she collapsed, Russell was hanging out with friends. She reportedly left the group, went around to the side of the house to a four-wheeler and began huffing gas, troopers said.
The girl's body was being sent to Anchorage for an autopsy, troopers said.
Selawik is 75 miles southeast of Kotzebue.
