Moose flatten Cats

Posted: Sunday, August 12, 2001

Palmer High School caught Skyview a little off guard Saturday. And a little off tackle. And a little bit more over center.

The Moose rushed for 385 yards and six touchdowns to defeat the host Panthers 42-7 in the season opener for both teams.

"Palmer's a pretty good football team," Skyview coach Wade Marcuson said. "They're big, strong and come off the ball hard.

"They may have been a little better than we expected."

In the two weeks of practice leading up to the game, Marcuson pointed to the contest against the Moose as a potential springboard to a good year.

The Panthers return about 12 seniors from last year's team, and add a group that went 6-1 on the junior varsity, so many picked them to win the Northern Lights Conference.

Although Marcuson certainly wasn't thrilled with his team's play, he also was quick to point out how good he thought Palmer is, calling the Moose twice as good as they were last year. Skyview lost to Palmer 21-6 in the first game of the 2000 season.

"The first couple of series they had against us, the way they were coming off the ball, we knew there might be problems," Marcuson said.

The Panthers were able to hold the Moose off the scoreboard until, with 7:56 left in the second quarter, Adam Norton rushed for the first of his three touchdowns. Norton rushed for 119 yards on 16 carries in the game.

Ali Larijani scored on a 1-yard play before the half to give the Moose a 16-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Palmer's misdirection running attack continued to pile up yards and points against Skyview.

Marcuson said one bright spot was the play of running backs Adam Kosydar, who finished with 73 yards on 10 carries, and Travis Endsley, who rushed for 23 yards on 11 attempts.

"Kosydar was running hard and moving those piles of 280-pound bodies pretty good," Marcuson said. "When he gets in our conference, he's going to be tough to stop."

Palmer coach Rod Christiansen said one of the main goals of his defense was to put pressure on Skyview senior quarterback Ely Evanson. The Moose succeeded in throwing off Evanson's game. He finished 1-for-8 with one interception.

"When you've got an arm like his, you can't just let him sit back there and throw the ball," Christiansen said.

Evanson's one completion on the day was a 55-yard pass to Neil Darling in the fourth quarter. Darling got to the 2-yard line on the play, and set up Evanson's 1-yard scoring run two plays later.

"With Alaska football, there's only two weeks to prepare for the first game and that's hard to do," Christiansen said. "Give Skyview some time. They'll be pretty tough by the end of the year."
