Blood-stem cell drive held today

A blood and stem cell drive to benefit Tommy Ellison and Sue Stein is planned from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Christ Lutheran Church at East Soldotna Avenue and the Kenai Spur Highway. Child care will be available.

Racing Lions to hold circle track races

The Kenai Peninsula Racing Lions will hold circle track races for late models, B-stock and A-stock cars beginning at 7 p.m. Friday at Twin Cities Raceway. For more information, call Chet at 283-9078.

Sterling Head Start begins registration

Sterling Head Start is accepting applications for the 2003-04 school year. Children must be 3 years old before Aug. 15, or 4 or 5 years old and not eligible for kindergarten.

Classes are run Tuesdays through Fridays. Morning session will run 9 a.m. to noon, with an afternoon session from 12:30 to 4 p.m. There is no fee and transportation is included. For more information, call 260-7446.

KWF invites residents to learn about loon habitat

The Kenai Watershed Forum will host biologist Liz Jozwiak from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kelly Peterson Lakes. Jozwiak will explain the research slated to begin on loons and trumpeter swans in the area.

The forum has canoe space for 10, or participants can provide their own canoe. Preregistration is required. For more information, call Josselyn at 260-5449.

Social Security rep to visit peninsula

A representative from the Social Security Administration will be on the peninsula next week. Sessions will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Seward City Council chambers; from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 20 at Kenai City Hall; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Homer Senior Citizens Center. Team building training course planned

The Foraker Group will offer a training session designed to help nonprofit organizations build effective teams from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the PRISM Training Center, 450 Marathon Road in Kenai.

Training is open to nonprofit staff, and board members are welcome to attend. Session fees are $40 for Foraker Partner organizations and $60 for all others. Registration forms are available online at For more information, call Karma at (907) 263-2092.

Power wheelchairs available

The Senior Wheels USA Program makes available power wheelchairs to senior citizens age 65 and older, as well as to qualifying individuals who are permanently disabled. The wheelchairs are designed for those who cannot walk and cannot self-propel a manual wheelchair and who meet the additional guidelines of the program. No deposit is required. United Way plans cruise to Fox Island

The Kenai Peninsula United Way will hold a kick off fund-raiser Aug. 24 in Seward. The Kenai Fjords Fox Island cruise will include dinner and the play, "Into Alaska a Woman Came."
