Nikiski man killed in accident

Posted: Thursday, August 12, 2004

A Nikiski man died Tuesday evening from serious head injuries sustained when he lost control of the four-wheeler he was riding in Kasilof, causing the vehicle to roll over.

Sheldon Cheeks, 45, was rushed by Central Emergency Services ambulance to Central Peninsula General Hospital, where he died.

According to Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Dan Donaldson, another person driving a four-wheeler behind Cheeks saw him lose control, fishtail a few times and roll over on a trail parallel to North Cohoe Loop near Mile 3.

Both four-wheelers had been traveling about 30 mph, the witness said.

Cheeks was not wearing a helmet.

Troopers said he had consumed alcohol, but could not say to what extent that may have been a factor in the accident.
