Deadline for football registration today

The registration deadline for Boys and Girls Club flag football is today. Children in grades four through eight are eligible to participate. For more information, call 283-2682.

Navy warship makes land

The USS Crommelin war ship will visit Homer today as part of the Alaska Shield-Northern Edge 2005 exercise. The exercise is conducted in cooperation with the state of Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, as well as other federal, sate and local agencies.

Summer festival set

The North Road Summer Festival will be held today and Saturday at the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center. A flea market, bazaar, garage sale and food vendors will be part of the festivities. On Saturday live bands and will play. For more information, call 776-7654.

Cowboy shooting match on target

A Cowboy Action Shooting Match will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the pistol range on Shotgun Drive at the Snow Shoe Gun Club. Set-up begins at 9 a.m. with registration at 9:45 a.m. Observers and contestants are required to wear eye and ear protection. Contestants also should wear western-style clothing.

Cowboy-era firearms include Civil War to 1897 modern replicas or originals, two single-action “six” guns, a lever-action Winchester-type exposed hammer rifle in pistol calibers and a “97” pump or double shotgun without automatic ejectors.

KPFA meeting slated

The Kenai Peninsula Fishermen’s Association will hold its annual meeting Saturday at the the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building at 40610 Kalifornsky Beach Road. The schedule of events will be: from 3 to 5 p.m. speakers; 5 to 6 :30 p.m. potluck; and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. business meeting and election of officers. For more information , call Chris at 262-2492.

Quilt entries due Monday

The cutoff for entering quilts to the Kenai Peninsula State Fair held in Ninilchik is at 1 p.m. Monday. Quilts can be delivered to the fair office or the Cooperative Extension office on Kalifornsky Beach Road.

Special pickup times are slated for 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Robin Place Fabrics in Soldotna and from 11 to 1 p.m. Monday at the fair office. For more information, call 262-2407 or 283-8170.

Montessori presentation slated

There will be a free presentation about Montessori education at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Challenger Learning Center of Alaska in Kenai. Tim Seldin, president of the International Montessori Foundation and author, will be the featured speaker. His topic will be the importance of quality early childhood education.
