The Nikiski Bulldogs got off to a great start in the Great Land Conference with a 28-7 win over the Houston Hawks on Saturday in Houston.

The Bulldogs kept their paws on the ground, with three of their four touchdowns coming from the running game. Defense played a big part in the conference and season opener, as the Hawks were held to the one score. It came with less than a minute to go in the first half.

Eielson 21, Kenai 14, OT

The Kenai Kardinals were grounded as the Eielson Ravens beat them in overtime in the season nonconference opener in Fairbanks.

Eielson took the early lead with a touchdown in the second quarter, but Kenai responded with one of its own, before taking the lead with at TD and two-point conversion in the second.

The Kardinals held that lead until the fourth quarter when the Ravens tied with a TD and two-pointer of their own, forcing overtime. The Eielson comeback was fueled by five lost fumbles on Kenai's part.

Kenai was led by Jeff Jackson, who had 61 yards rushing and two TDs. Kardinals quarterback Wally Ward went 1 of 4 with one interception for 21 yards.

The Ravens hammered it out on the ground as well, with Tyler Ham racking up 118 yards on 17 carries.

Sitka 39, Seward 7

The Sitka Wolves devoured the hopes of the Seward Seahawks in a season-opening Great Land Conference football game in Seward Saturday.

The scoring started early for the Wolves, as they recovered a Seahawks fumble on the opening kickoff and scored one play later on a 31-yard run.

Seward crossed the goal line once, early in the second quarter with a 22-yard catch by senior tight end Devin Loomis from the hands of junior QB Garrett Boyle.

The Sitka win gives it a perfect 1-0 record for the season, and in its history, as it was the first varsity football game the school ever played.

Palmer 21, Skyview 6

Like the moose they are named for, the Palmer High School football team trampled the high hopes of the Skyview Panthers in the season opener Saturday in Palmer.

And like the moose, the Moose did it on the ground, racking up 195 yards to Skyview's 12.

Palmer running back Derek Hughes, a senior, bulldozed his way to 123 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. The Palmer ground game was enough to make up for an anemic passing attack, with junior quarterback Ben Conroy completing only 2 of 6 for 13 yards.

The tables were somewhat turned for the Panthers, as five rushers could only manage 12 yards on 31 carries, while junior QB Eli Evanson went 6 of 14 with 68 yards to a trio of receivers.
