ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The Anchorage Aces hockey team has hired a former NHL coach and player to lead the team, the Aces announced Monday.

Butch Goring, 51, was coach of the New York Islanders until he was fired in March. Before that, he coached the Boston Bruins and several minor league teams.

Goring played in the National Hockey League for 16 seasons, winning the award as most valuable player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 1981. HE was with the Islanders when they won four straight championships in the early 1980s.

He replaces Walt Poddubny, who resigned in May.
