KNWR opens to waterfowl and small game hunting

Small game hunting opened in most areas of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (KNWR) August 10th. According to Bill Kent, KNWR Supervisory Park Ranger, Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area will open to archery hunting for small game October 1st. "Hunters are reminded that discharge of firearms is not authorized within _ mile of KNWR campgrounds, trailheads, or other developed facilities, and that target shooting is not authorized anywhere on the Refuge. The most important thing for hunters to remember is that they need to know where they are. That they are not on private property and that they are on the Refuge, " said Kent.

Aircraft are required to land within designated areas and All Terrain Vehicles (ATV's) are prohibited on all Refuge lands including tidally influenced areas within the Chickaloon Bay area. For people seeking alternatives to fall hunting season, Kent suggests hiking one of the several Refuge trails. Visitors hiking or berry picking are encouraged to wear bright colored clothing to enhance their safety from hunters. For information on various hunting regulations, Refuge access regulations, or fall outdoor recreation opportunities, stop by the KNWR headquarters or call 262-7021. "We love for people to come in. A little prevention to make sure you are aware of the regulations, can insure that you have a good experience rather not such a good experience with one of our enforcement officers," said Kent.
