Anchorage trail watch volunteers begin training

Posted: Thursday, August 14, 2003

ANCHORAGE (AP) Volunteers have begun training on Anchorage's sprawling trail system as a way to promote safety.

The Anchorage Police Department Auxiliary Search Team, 55 members strong, helps Anchorage police look for missing people and assists them with evidence searches.

The issue of trail safety emerged in recent months as a result of four attempted sexual assaults and a dead man found by a girl Monday. A volunteer trail watch program launched by Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich is set to begin by September.

The volunteers began training Monday with 12 members on the trails. They helped one person who needed medical assistance, police said.
