Former Alaska resident Gary Soren Christopherson died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003, in Mankato, Minn. He was 59.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, at the United Methodist Church of Ludington, Mich. Visitation is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Landkamer-Johnson-Boman Funeral Home in Mankato, with a service of remembrance at 7 p.m. Interment will be in Alaska at a later date.
Mr. Christopherson was born on Aug. 10, 1944, to Soren and Viola (Morell) Christopherson in Ludington. Upon graduated from Ludington High School in 1962, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served in Vietnam on the Admiral's staff.
On May 4, 1967, Mr. Christopherson married the love of his life, Ruby R. Robertson, in Lincoln City, Ore.
Together the Christophersons shared an enthusiasm for travel and discovering new places.
In addition to taking many cruises and trips to far-off destinations, they enjoyed taking day-trips in search of interesting local sites.
In 1976, he joined Pacific Telecom Inc. (PTI), a move that brought him to a new home in the land he loved: Alaska.
"An avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, he thought of Alaska as his own personal paradise and an ideal setting for raising his two children," his family said.
Mr. Christopherson was preceded in death by his father, Soren Christopherson.
Mr. Christopherson is survived by his wife, Ruby, of Janesville, Minn.; mother, Viola (Morell) Christopherson, of Ludington; daughter, Suzanne Klaben and her husband, Paul, of Kenai; son, Larry, of Anchorage; sister, Darlene Ponko and her husband, Jerry, of Ludington; granddaughter, Michelle Klaben, of Kenai; and a niece, two nephews and a grand-niece.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to P.O. Box 572, Janesville, MN 56048. The money will be used for Fish and Game services in Alaska.
