JUNEAU (AP) -- A Haines man received four years in prison for kicking his uncle and causing his death.
Robert Skulka, 36, was sentenced Wednesday in Juneau Superior Court to six years in prison with two years suspended and three years of probation for the Sept. 17, 2001, incident in Haines.
Skulka will spend the next three years in prison because he will get credit for time served. He pleaded guilty in March to criminally negligent homicide.
Skulka kicked his uncle, William Jackson, in the liver at Jackson's trailer in Haines when the two men argued.
Unbeknownst to Skulka, Jackson had a degenerative liver disorder, said defense attorney Philip Pallenberg. When Skulka kicked his uncle, he hit the already damaged liver, dislodging the weakened renal artery, causing massive hemorrhaging that killed Jackson.
Superior Court Judge Patricia Collins could have sentenced Skulka to a maximum of 10 years in prison.
