History: Homer Middle School was built in 1970 and renovated in 1978. Currently under capacity, the school serves about 230 students in grades seven and eight.

Demographics: Homer Middle has a 91 percent Caucasian student population, with ethnicities such as African-American (1 percent), Hispanic (2 percent), Asian-Pacific Islander (2 percent) and Alaska Native (4 percent) represented. About 33 percent of the school's students come from economically disadvantaged homes, and 16 percent of students experience disabilities.
Staffing: Homer Middle School has a full-time principal, 10 teachers, one specialist (for art, library and music), two special education teachers and 1.32 special education aide positions, a half-time nurse, 1.5 secretary positions and 2.5 custodian positions.
Teachers at the school have a combined average of about 13.5 years experience with the district.
AYP: Homer Middle School did not make adequate yearly progress during the 2002-03 school year. While the school as a whole had a high percentage of proficiency on standardized tests (90 percent passed in language arts and 85 percent in math), less than the required 95 percent of special education students participated in the testing.
In 2003-04, Homer Middle made AYP with 88 percent of students proficient in language arts and 81 percent proficient in math. The school corrected the low participation rate in the students with disabilities subgroup, though the subgroup was too small for passing rates to factor into AYP determination.
Cocurricular: Homer Mid-dle has paid coaches for cross country running, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, volleyball, Nordic skiing and track and field.
Stipend-receiving staff members also run music and forensics activities, as well as an intramural sports program.
The school mascot is the Huskies.
Registration: New student registration was from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 13.
