Demographics: The student body at Seward Elementary is 74 percent Caucasian, 3 percent African-American, 3 percent Hispanic, 1 percent Asian-Pacific Islander, 2 percent American Indian and 18 percent Alaska Native. About 23 percent of the students experience disabilities, and 43 percent come from economically disadvantaged homes.

Staffing: Seward Elemen-tary staffs a full-time administrator and 12.5 regular-instruction teachers (down from 15 last year), as well as two specialists, 3.75 special-education teaching positions and three special education aides. There is a part-time nurse, a secretary and three custodians. Teachers at the school have a combined average of about 12 years experience with the district.

AYP: In 2002-03, Seward Elementary School did not make adequate yearly progress. Though the student body at large did well on standardized tests (76 percent were proficient in language arts; 64 percent in math), the students with disabilities subgroup had lower-than-required proficiency rates in both subjects.

In 2003-04, Seward Elem-entary met AYP with 77 percent of students proficient in language arts and 69 percent proficient in math. New regulations meant the school's students with disabilities subgroup was too small to count.

Cocurricular: Seward Elem-entary students may participate in intramural sports and academic activities.

Registration: Families may register their students for classes between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. through Aug. 23.

Transportation: Bus routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 serve Seward Elementary School. Contact Laidlaw for more information.

School hours: 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.
