Seward High School

History: Seward High School was built in 1977 and renovated in 1982. The school includes classrooms, a theater, a swimming pool, a gym and labs for science and vocational education. It currently serves about 280 students in ninth through 12th grade.

Demographics: The student population of Seward High School is 73 percent Caucasian, 1 percent African American, 2 percent Hispanic, 2 percent Asian-Pacific Is-lander, 4 percent American Indian and 19 percent Alaska Native. About 15 percent of the students experience disabilities, and 30 percent live in economically disadvantaged homes.

Staffing: Seward High School has a full-time principal, an athletic director, an assistant principal who also serves as principal of Seward Middle School, 10.75 regular-education teaching positions, 1. 25 specialist positions, 2.5 special education teaching positions, .88 special education aide positions and 1.5 regular-education aide positions. There also is a part-time nurse, two secretaries and 2.5 custodial positions. Teachers at the school have a combined average of nearly eight years experience with the district.

AYP: In 2002-03, Seward High School met adequate yearly progress with 82 percent of students proficient in language arts and 80 percent proficient in math. In 2003-04, Seward High again met AYP, with 85 percent of students passing language arts and 77 percent proficient in math.

Cocurricular: Seward High School students have the opportunity to participate in cross country running, boys and girls soccer, swimming and diving, football, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, volleyball, Nordic skiing, track and field and cheerleading, as well as music, drama, yearbook and clubs.

Registration: Students may register between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Aug. 16, 17 and 23 or from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 18 through 20.

Transportation: Bus routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 serve Seward High School.

School hours: 8:30 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.
