Teen writers sought

The Clarion is seeking students from Nikiski, Kenai, Skyview and Soldotna high schools interested in writing for its Verbatim column. The column is designed to let teens voice their opinions on topics of interest to them — school, family life, dating, politics, etc. Verbatim will be printed in the Wednesday Schools section beginning Sept. 6.

Students in grades nine through 12 are eligible to submit a writing sample. The column length is 500 words minimum, 700 words maximum.

Nutrition classes held at food bank

Subsistence Eating on the Kenai nutrition classes are being offered free of charge from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesdays for six weeks at the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank at 33955 Community College Drive on Kalifornsky Beach Road.

Participants who attend four classes may enter to win a prize. Colleen Sonnevil of the Cooperative Extension Service will instruct the class. For more information, call 262-3111.

Meditative walking path available

A labyrinth, a meditative walking path, will be available to the public to walk from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month, beginning this week and continuing through Oct. 18 at Central Peninsula General Hospital in the Redoubt and Spur Rooms. The canvas labyrinth is part of an effort to generate interest and support for a permanent labyrinth and healing garden to be developed at the hospital.

Car seat checkups set

Safe Kids Kenai Peninsula and Central Peninsula General Hospital will hold free car seat checkups at the Kenai Fire Department from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday; and Soldotna Fire Department from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 25. For more information, call 714-4539.

Chili contest planned

The 14th annual chili cook-off will be held in conjunction with Industry Appreciation Day on Aug. 26. The deadline to register is Aug. 23. Up to four members are allowed on a team. For more information and contest rules, call Pat Porter at 252-5992.
