Rain, mud gives runners a challenge

Nikiski Class Races start cross country season on Kenai Peninsula

Posted: Tuesday, August 15, 2006

How tough was the course at the Nikiski Class Races at Nikiski Middle-High School on Monday?

When asked which was tougher, the descents at Nikiski or at Mount Marathon, girls junior-senior race winner Denali Foldager replied: “The downhills on this, definitely.”

The Nikiski course is normally a tough test for runners due to its steady diet of steep hills. Making the test even tougher Monday was the steady rain that fell and put a slippery film of mud on top of the course.

Foldager, who won the Class 1-2-3A state running title last year by narrowly edging Nychele Fischetti, edged the ACS junior again to win the five-kilometer race. Foldager finished in 21 minutes, 9 seconds, while Fischetti was two seconds behind. Foldager’s twin, Rubye, finished third and also joined her sister in celebrating a birthday Monday.

“I have no idea how Nychele or I didn’t fall on any of the downhills,” said Denali, who was feeling sick but still was able to hold off Fischetti.

Fischetti said the course actually wasn’t as bad as she thought it was going to be.

“My coach has told me that to beat the sisters I have to make my move before they do,” Fischetti said. “There were a couple of times today I felt like I could run faster but I didn’t. I’m not quite sure why I didn’t.”

In the girls freshman-sophomore race, Colony freshman Heidi Doner overtook CIA sophomore Holly Kopp late in the race to win in 22:27. Kopp finished at 22:39.

“This race is nice,” Doner said of the Nikiski format that separates runners according to class. “It would have been nice to see how I did running against upperclassmen. On the other hand, it was really nice winning my first high school race.”

Kopp said Doner passed her on an uphill. She didn’t have the energy to keep up with her.

“After she passed me, I got a little bit down mentally,” Kopp said. “I didn’t feel my best today. I think I was still a little bit sore from winning the (Kenai Peninsula) Run for Women (on Saturday).”

Kodiak runners dominated the boys races. The top time of the day came from sophomore Trevor Dunbar in the boys freshman-sophomore race. Dunbar finished at 17:34. Dunbar said Kodiak doesn’t normally come to the Nikiski race but, like many other teams, the Bears were scouting the Nikiski course because the Region III meet will be held there this year.

If it is raining come region time, Dunbar learned a valuable lesson.

“I put in too little of spikes,” Dunbar said. “I was slipping all over the place. It was an experience true to the cross country sport. The terrain was hard to run on.”

Mike Miller of ACS was second in the race in 17:59.

“I actually like running in the rain and I like muddy,” Miller said. “In the rain, you don’t get so hot. It makes it a lot easier to run.”

In the boys junior-senior race, Kodiak seniors Cory Pena and Lucas Fried were first and second with times of 17:44 and 18:12, respectively. Pena was 21st at state last year, but trained all summer with the idea of helping the Bears to a state title this year.

“There was about five of us that trained every day this summer,” Pena said.

Unlike Pena, who jumped to the front of the pack and stayed there, Fried ran in 15th for a while and gradually worked his way up to second place. As a Kodiak runner, Fried had no complaints about the weather.

“This is pretty much what we trained in all summer, anyway,” Fried said.
