The basics of leadership

Posted: Friday, August 15, 2008

On Wednesday, Gov. Sarah Palin held a press conference regarding pressure from her administration to the Public Safety Department to fire a state trooper who went through a messy divorce with Palin's sister, Molly McCann, in 2005.

The governor had said before that her administration never exerted pressure on anyone in an effort to get rid of Trooper Mike Wooten.

However, on Wednesday, Palin disclosed that members of her staff had made about two dozen calls concerning Wooten with Public Safety officials. The governor went on to say that her firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan had nothing to do with Wooten still being on the force.

A tape recording of a call made by Boards and Commissions Director Frank Bailey to Lt. Rodney Dial in February pushing for the firing of Wooten surfaced Tuesday. Bailey said the governor never gave him any direction to make the call to the Department of Public Safety. Palin maintains she gave no one such direction.

"However, the serious nature of the contacts understandably could be perceived as some kind of pressure, presumably at my direction," she said.

Do you think?

In her campaign, the governor ran on a policy of transparent government and accountability. We would like to remind her that her accountability does not include only her, but also her administration and individual staff members.

Any good leader understands that responsibility.

The governor said one of the reasons she fired Monegan was because he "wasn't a team player on budgeting issues."

To that we have two questions: 1) How come it took two years to discover he wasn't a team player? and 2) Why was Monegan offered another job on the team if he wasn't a team player?

When the governor's staff and administration do things, they are representing the governor, period. That's how it works in the real world.

Either Gov. Palin isn't telling the truth about this whole mess or she is a very weak leader who has surrounded herself with incompetent staff members.

Alaskans can handle the truth, and we feel it's about time Sarah Palin gave it to us.
