Stevens will be missed

Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2010

In 1969, I was an Alaska State Trooper stationed in Kenai. I also managed a little league team and our team had just won the state championship.

I was invited to be recognized at the Chamber luncheon where U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens was too be the special speaker. During the meeting, I was introduced as the manager of the little league team that had brought Kenai it's first state championship and received a standing ovation as a show of appreciation. Later, Sen. Stevens was introduced, as the principal speaker, to a polite applause.

After the meeting, Sen. Stevens came to me, extended his hand and congratulated me on my teams victory. Then, alluding to my ovation, said with a smile and wink, "Congratulations Trooper, and I'm glad that Kenai has their priorities in order."

Senator, may you have eternal peace. You will be missed by a lot of Alaskans.
