Soldotna, Nikiski notch tough victories on road

Soldotna defeated Kodiak 28-0 on Saturday in Kodiak to move to 11-0 against the Bears' squad.

The Stars continued to have fumble problems -- fumbling eight times and losing the ball four times -- but with their dominant defense, it did not matter.

Kodiak got just 30 yards of total offense, while Soldotna's 218 yards of rushing was complemented by 54 passing yards that kept the Bears off-balance on defense.

Auston Tennis' 12-yard run was the only score of the first half. In the third quarter, Phil Bennett had a pair of touchdown runs. Bennett ran for 144 yards. He added a touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.

Nikiski 34, Delta 6

The Bulldogs raced to a 21-0 lead in the first half in collecting a Great Land Conference victory on the road.

Nikiski is now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Stephen Krogseng rushed for a pair of touchdowns and scored another through the air to lead the Bulldogs.

"Krogseng gave the team a lift with what he did today," Nikiski coach Ted Riddall said.

Kaden Spurgeon also rushed for 105 yards and a pair of scores for the Bulldogs.

Riddall also said his defense played a big part in the game. Nikiski had six sacks, including three by Lincoln Johnson. Walter Moore also had two interceptions, including one he returned 29 yards to set up an early score.
