Kenai Peninsula Run For Women 10-kilometer winner Heather Gaines takes a high-five from five-kilometer runner Millie Carlson before crossing the finish line in 44:06 Saturday morning.

"This is my best time ever in a 5K," Ostrander said. "I do this every year and I've never won before. It's cool I could win this year."

"She was wicked fast," Foldager said of Ostrander. "That's the first time she's beat me. She always comes in right behind me. She did really good."

Ostrander said she passed Foldager at the halfway point. As her breathing became heavier and louder, Ostrander, not wanting to look behind her, said she couldn't tell if Foldager was on her heels or not.

"My mom tells me never to look back," Ostrander said.

Ostrander said she disregarded mom's rule once, and glanced back near the finish line. Seeing no one close, Ostrander knew she had the victory.

The race route stays in Kenai and features no inclines, making it a fast course.

"The only hard thing is it's all on pavement," Ostrander said. "It can be hard on your legs."

Foldager, who runs for California State University Stanislaus, used the race to get back into running after a two-week hiatus. Foldager leaves for school today where she runs with twin sister, Rubye. Denali and Rubye turned 21 on Saturday.

"Me and my sister were supposed to run, but she didn't wake up," Denali said.

Heather Gaines won the 10-kilometer race with time of 44:06. Stacey Leitz took second with a time of 44:39 and Satorene Jackson placed third with a time of 46:47.

"It's my first, first-place 10K," Gaines said. "It's my second fastest time for this course."

Gaines also recently won the Everything But the Red Run.

"It's been a really good year," she said.

Gaines said she had the lead the entire race. She listened for the crowd cheering for someone behind her. When she couldn't hear those cheers, Gaines said she knew she had the win.

"I didn't come out to win, I came out to run," she said. "I wanted to win, but I didn't expect to.

"It was awesome," Gaines said. "It's a really fast, really flat course."

Knowing the course and the event well worked to Gaines' advantage.

"I'm really familiar with it," she said. "I've done it almost every year.

"I came out with my friends. It was just a fun day," Gaines added.
