ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Five members of the Alaska Army National Guard are the winners of an international parachute competition.

The five are part of the guard's Long Range Surveillance Airborne Detachment of the 207th Infantry Group headquartered at Camp Denali on Fort Richardson.

Forty-eight teams competed in Leap Fest 2001, an event hosted by the Rhode Island National Guard over the weekend in Kingston, R.I.

Each team was made up of four members and an alternate.

Members of the Alaska team are Sgt. John Drew, Capt. Robert Nash, Staff Sgt. Stephen Blair, Staff Sgt. Troy Dodwin and Sgt. Eryk Crawford.

Each team member jumped three times from a CH-47 ''Chinook'' helicopter.

They were judged on how fast they reached the middle of a jump target after touching the ground.

The competition included teams from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Italy and South Africa, plus U.S. teams from the Navy Seals and the Marines.
