The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will offer a basic hunter education certification class Monday.

The one-day course requires completion of a self-study workbook and includes four hours of classroom instruction, a written test, and an additional four hours of instruction and a shooting proficiency test on a shooting range.

The classroom portion will begin at 8 a.m. at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture building on Kalifornsky Beach Road in Kenai. After a lunch break, instruction will resume at the Snow Shoe Gun Club off the Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai at 1 p.m.

Cost of the course is $10 per participant.

Beginning Aug. 1, hunters born after Jan. 1, 1986, must possess a hunter education certification to legally hunt in Game Management Units 7, 13, 14, 15 and 20, or, if a hunter is under 16 and does not have a certification, he or she must be under the direct, immediate supervision of a licensed hunter who has successfully completed a certified hunter education course.
