Ministry offers 'Direct Line 2 God'

The New 2 U clothing ministry, a service ministry of the First Baptist Church of Soldotna, meets the first and third Saturday of every month. Part of the ministry includes a 12-hour-a-day, every day prayer ministry, "Direct Line 2 God." To participate in the ministry, call Joy at 262-0641.

Writers sought for faith anthology

Writers from Alaska are invited to share their own experiences of the power of prayer and faith in an anthology to be published in the latter half of 2003.

The anthology, "A Matter Of Faith", is being compiled by Arrowhead Publishing to provide examples of the positive power of prayer. Writers are invited to submit essays of up to 750 words that share their own experiences of how their faith has helped them meet major challenges in the journey through life.

Those whose works are selected will share in the royalties from book sales.

Information on this project is available at or by sending a stamped self addressed envelope to A Matter Of Faith, Arrowhead Publishing, P.O. Box 1472, O'Fallon, Mo., 63366.

Retirees travel country to help congregations build

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- A 7,900-square-foot addition to the Risen Christ Lutheran Church will be a work of faith.

Construction is being led by Laborers For Christ, a group of retirees that travels the country working for minimum wage building churches, schools and ministry organizations.

The St. Louis-based group is affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

The group formed in 1979 to build churches and schools in the Midwest, and has expanded nationally to 350 laborers and 60 foremen.

The Springfield project in western Ohio includes plans for five classrooms, a youth room, a preschool and offices.

Group leaders Dale and Irma Mellendorf, of Effingham, Ill., are retired dairy farmers who've been missionaries for 13 years. They said they've been to 17 states with Laborers For Christ, living in a recreational vehicle and staying as long as it takes to finish a project.

Group members don't need a construction background, Mellendorf said. The church hires professional contractors to install heating, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical work and roof trusses.
