Kenai Chamber honors member of United Way campaign 2004
The Kenai Peninsula United Way Board of Directors and 2004 Campaign Chair, David Gilbreath, formerly congratulated major contributors and campaign volunteers at the regularly scheduled Kenai Chamber luncheon August 3rd. The campaign had set an ambitious goal of $600,000 for 2004, after having raised $550,000 the previous year. “We wanted a stretch, but we also wanted an attainable goal,” said Gilbreath. However, as the campaign was heading into its final weeks it was still some $78,000 short of meeting that goal. That was when United Way executive director Tina Herford called Bob Penny, “I was given his number and told he might be a good contact. After answering some of his questions about United Way and our services, he said he’d give it some thought and call me back. I was hopeful, but was totally shocked and surprised when he called back to say that if we could raise half of the short fall, which amounted to $39,000, he would match that amount,” Herford told the Kenai Chamber.
Energized and encouraged by the Penny challenge Herford and the team quickly went to work to meet the challenge. They not only succeeded but raised an additional $40,000 bringing the total for the 2004 campaign to $640,000. “It was the Penny challenge that put us over the top of our goal,” said Herford presenting a plaque of appreciation to the Penny family. “The older I get, the more I find out that the more you give, the more you receive,” said Penny receiving the award on behalf of his family.
Other major contributors were also recognized at the Chamber luncheon. “A heartfelt thank you goes to our Campaign Chair David Gilbreath, President/CEO of Central Peninsula General Hospital and Vice Chair, Kristine Holdridge of Alaska USA, they did a tremendous job,” said Herford. Additionally Herford expressed appreciation to the 2004 Campaign Cabinet, Allocations Committee, Days of Caring Volunteers, Tesoro Petroleum Golf Tournament Committee, and all the committed community members who generously contributed time and dollars to help the many agencies supporting their Kenai Peninsula neighbors.
