Refuge to celebrate berries

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will host a Wild Berry Fun Day on Aug. 20. Wild berry activities and crafts take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Refuge Environmental Education Center in Soldotna. Wild berry snacks and drinks will be available. A free drawing will be held for wild berry products.

Guided berry identification walks will be held throughout the day. For families with younger children, an 1/4 mile walk lasting 30 minutes will take place at 12:30, 1, 2 and 3 p.m. For those ages 10 and older, a 3/4 mile hike lasting 45 minutes will take place at 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Pre-registration for walks is required. Activities are free to the public. To pre-register for hikes or for more information, call Candace Ward at the refuge at 262-7021.

All Veterans' picnic slated

A free picnic to honor all who have served in the military will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Kenai Park Strip on Main Street in Kenai. Activities planned are blood pressure checks, live music, VA reps on site to answer questions, door prizes, VAVs representatives, games for children.

Pet photos run on the Pets page every Tuesday. They can be color or black and white and may include people. Limit one photo per household. They may be e-mailed to news@peninsulaclarion.com, dropped off at the Kenai office or mailed to the Clarion at P.O. Box 3009, Kenai, 99611. A brief explanation of the photo, the pet's and owner's names, owner's address and phone number must be included.

High school basketball begins

The Boys & Girls Club of the Kenai Peninsula is taking registrations for high school basketball. The season runs from Sept. 13 to Nov. 5.

Games begin the week of Sept. 27. The cost is $70, and the participant must be a 2010 member. The membership fee is $20. The registration deadline is Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. To register, visit the Kenai Rec Center or contact the Athletics Department at 283-3318.

Immunizations available

Kenai Public Health Center is taking appointments for immunizations. In Kenai, appointments are available Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Appointments are available at the Cottonwood Health Center in Soldotna on Thursdays. To schedule an appointment at either location or for more information, call 335-3400.

Operation Homefront Freedom Walk

Come show your support for our troops and veterans past and present and remember 9/11. The walk will be held Saturday September 11th at 10am at the Soldotna Church of God. Registration is FREE! Pre-register online at operationhomefront.net or registration will be available at 8:30am at the church before the walk begins. Bikes, scooters and strollers are welcome! Free t-shirts to be given to the first 150 people to register! Donations will be accepted. All proceeds will go to Operation Homefront for Alaskan military families. Wacky bowling starting

The Friday Night Bowling League (Wild and Wacky) will start Friday Aug. 20th at 6 p.m. in Kenai at Alaska Lanes. If you are interested in having some fun this winter on Friday nights, we still have openings for more teams. For more info call Judy at 398-7658

Beginning Day hosted
