Crab fisheries closed; low stocks blamed

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- The state Department of Fish and Game says the St. Matthew Island blue king crab fishery and the Pribilof Islands red and blue king crab fisheries will be closed again this year because of low crab populations found in this summer's Bering Sea research survey.

The agency said, however, that the larger and more lucrative Bristol Bay red king crab fishery will go on as scheduled in October.

The harvest level there won't be announced until Friday, after an analysis of the data was complete, biologists said.
