Occupation: Real estate businessman

Family: Wife Margaret Ward; three daughters, three son-in-laws and five grandchildren all living in Alaska.

Education: West High School 1966 GED and Heavy equipment school with the Navy Sea Bees.

Organizations and special interests: U.S. Navy (Vietnam), Construction man, Vietnam Service Medal and Honorable Discharge. I am a member of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and the North Kenai Chamber of Commerce, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No.10252 and the American Legion Post No. 28. My special interests include fishing, hunting and boating.

Previously held elected office and experience: I currently represent the people on the Kenai, Nikiski and K-Beach Road in the Alaska State Senate. I have been your senator from 1996 until the present. I also serve as chairman of the Transportation Committee and State Affairs Committee, co-chair of the Privatization Task Force.

I am a member of the Senate Finance Subcommittee on Military and Veteran Affairs and the Department of Corrections. At the national level, I serve on the Executive Committee on the National Conference of State Legislators. I served in the state House of Representatives from 1982-1984 on the Finance Committee and Special Loan Committee. Throughout my life I also served on various municipal commissions at the pleasure of the mayor.

Expected cost of campaign: Support from individuals is essential as political campaigns have become very expensive, especially for television, radio and newspaper advertising that is almost mandatory to win an election. Participating in a campaign can be a difficult choice for some people. However, because our system of government relies on the people electing those who run government, it is crucial that as many participants as possible become involved in the process.
