ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Residents of the village of Mekoryuk were searching Thursday for a missing 36-year-old commercial fisherman.
Alaska State Troopers said Raymond Edwards set out Wednesday afternoon to participate in the halibut fishery. The fishery closed at 9 p.m.
When Edwards hadn't returned by 1 a.m. to off-load his fish he was reported missing.
Residents of the village set out in seven boats Thursday morning to search for Edwards. His swamped wooden skiff was found at about 10:30 a.m. near Cape Etolin, about a mile offshore. But there was no sign of his body.
The search by villagers and the local public safety officer was continuing. Troopers were helping to coordinate the search.
Mekoryuk is on Nunivak Island, off the coast of western Alaska.
