Candidates line up for election

Filing period closes

Wednesday was the deadline to file for most races in the Oct. 2 Kenai Peninsula Borough and city election.

The traditional flurry of last-minute filings set up some potential horse races in areas where incumbents have been without opposition in recent years.

Borough voters will get a say in three ballot propositions, dealing with reapportioning voting districts, authorizing bonds to expand the borough administration building and allowing the borough to proceed with planning for a potential private prison near Kenai.

Borough Clerk Linda Murphy said Tuesday that the wording on the propositions will be posted on the Internet soon.

The candidate filings were fairly routine, but voters have some real choices this year, she said.

"That was nice -- to have a race. I might feel differently if I were one of the candidates," she said.
