I’ve noticed a number of Sarah Palin supporters want to believe that she is the next Jay Hammond. Numerous letters to editors from her supporters have proclaimed that but offer no supporting evidence.
In truth, Gov. Hammond endorsed the 2002 Democrat and pro-choice candidate for governor, Fran Ulmer. Unfortunately, we will never know the late Gov. Jay Hammond’s opinion of Palin. We do know, however, that Palin has a history of opposing a state income tax, something that Jay Hammond truly endorsed while alive.
Palin also doesn’t just personally disapprove of reproductive freedom, she wants to criminalize abortion. In stark contrast, Sen. Jay Hammond voted in favor of SB 527, legalizing abortion in Alaska, three years prior to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision on April 2, 1970. We also know that reproductive freedom is the one of the most important issues that distinguishes a Jay Hammond moderate from a Jerry Prevo fundamentalist.
Regardless of the false endorsements trotted out by her campaign, Palin’s own statements and record show that she is far from a moderate, and far from Jay Hammond.
