KENAI (AP) -- A nature trail at Kenai Peninsula College in Soldotna will be named in honor of retired instructor and naturalist Boyd Shaffer.

A dedication ceremony was to take place Saturday morning at the trailhead. A reception honoring Shaffer was to follow in the college commons.

Shaffer recently retired from the college after more than 25 years. He's the author of the book, ''The Flora of South Central Alaska: A Handbook for Field Identification of Common Lichens, Mosses, Liverworts, and Vascular Plants.''

Shaffer did much of his research along the nature trial which will now bear his name.
